Our Curriculum @ The Hive

Our curriculum is personalised and differentiated to meet the individual needs of every learner. It provides an engaging and appropriately challenging learning experience while recognising and responding to each child's unique strengths and needs. We use both the Sensory Curriculum and the CATHS Curriculum to support childrens' holistic development. The Sensory Curriculum breaks learning into key developmental areas, enabling teaching to be tailored to individual abilities. A particular focus is placed on developing functional communication, supporting children to understand and use language for a range of purposes beyond simply making requests. Where appropriate access to the National Curriculum is maintained through thoughtful adaptation, interpretation and innovative teaching approaches, ensuring all children can engage in meaningful and purposeful learning. Our curriculum is closely aligned with each child's Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), with teaching and learning linked directly to EHCP outcomes to inform planning, monitor progress and support the achievement of personalised goals.

Wider Curriculum and Opportunities

 At The Hive, we are passionate about providing a rich and varied wider curriculum that helps children develop the skills, confidence and experiences they need for life beyond the classroom. Throughout the year, children will take part in a range of meaningful activities that support their personal development, independence and understanding of the world around them. These may include walks within the local community, visits to local shops and The Portal at our Oxley campus, cooking and baking experiences, and visits from a petting zoo, all providing valuable opportunities for real-life learning. Children will also participate in whole-school events such as Sports Day and House Days, promoting teamwork, resilience, healthy competition and a strong sense of belonging. Where appropriate, children will have opportunities to attend assemblies and engage with the wider school community. We are proud to celebrate every success through our Golden Tickets and Golden Threads, recognising effort, achievement and personal growth throughout each child's journey at The Hive.

Attention Autism

Attention Autism is a highly engaging, practical programme that supports the development of attention, communication, and shared enjoyment. Through visually stimulating activities and structured routines, pupils learn to:

  • Maintain attention for increasing periods

  • Engage in joint attention with adults and peers

  • Develop turn‑taking skills

  • Build positive communication behaviours

This approach is particularly effective for pupils with communication and interaction needs.

 

Sensory Story

Our Sensory Story sessions bring narratives to life through rich, multisensory experiences. Each story incorporates sensory elements—such as sound, texture, movement, and scent—to support:

  • Language development

  • Sensory processing

  • Emotional regulation

  • Story comprehension and recall

These sessions are ideal for pupils who learn best through hands‑on, sensory exploration.

 

Talking and Listening

The Talking and Listening intervention focuses on strengthening the communication skills that underpin learning across the curriculum. Sessions help pupils to:

  • Build and use new vocabulary

  • Develop expressive and receptive language

  • Improve listening and attention

  • Strengthen conversational and social communication skills

Activities are interactive, purposeful, and tailored to individual needs.

 

Be Active Sessions

Our Be Active sessions promote physical development, wellbeing, and self‑regulation through structured movement activities. These sessions support pupils to:

  • Develop gross motor skills

  • Improve coordination and balance

  • Build confidence in physical activity

  • Regulate emotions through movement and sensory input

Be Active is particularly beneficial for pupils who thrive with kinaesthetic learning opportunities.

 

Little Wandle SEN Phonics

We deliver Little Wandle SEN Phonics; a specialist adaptation of the Little Wandle programme designed for pupils with additional needs. This structured, cumulative approach supports children to:

  • Develop phonological awareness

  • Build early reading and spelling skills

  • Progress through small, manageable steps

  • Access high‑quality, multisensory phonics teaching

The programme is flexible and responsive, ensuring every learner can move forward confidently.

 

Mastering Number at KS1

Mastering Number at KS1 provides targeted support to strengthen early number sense. Through short, focused sessions, pupils develop:

  • Fluency with number facts

  • Confidence with counting and subitising

  • A deep understanding of number relationships

  • Strategies for mental calculation

This intervention lays secure foundations for future mathematical learning.
