Geography
Mrs Frayne-Johnson, our geography leads, welcomes you... |
Welcome to the OPA Geography Page. Here you will find information about Geography at OPA including our subject pathway; detailing the content taught in each year group and the progression of geography throughout a child’s time at OPA. Geography is taught as part of our Doorways and Pathways curriculum. We follow the National Curriculum programme of study and build powerful knowledge through our key themes of geographical features, locational knowledge and environmental geography.
What is Geography? |
Geography is the study of the Earth’s landscape, people, places and environments
In school, we have 3 key concepts in Geography. As Geographers we learn to :
· Investigate places—by looking at their location and their human and physical features.
· Investigate patterns— by looking at the relationships between people and the places in which they live and how the resources are used.
· Communicate geographically— by using specific vocabulary and representations when talking about places.
Each year the children become more skilled in these key concepts, building upon their prior knowledge and understanding. Our intention is that as they move onto the next phase of their learning journey, our Year 6 pupils have developed a natural curiosity about the world around them. They are able to talk confidently about places they have studied, recalling key facts; they understand where each place is situated, and what it is like, and can use specific vocabulary to compare places around the world. Children will also have a clear understanding of where they fit in the world and how places are interconnected and influenced by natural and human factors.
