Sanctuary Spaces

The Umbrella Pods

The Umbrella Pods are located around each campus.

Under the umbrella, children will be promoting everything about acceptance and staying safe, such as anti-bullying, stranger danger, staying safe online, different families, different cultures and also finding a friend.

Also under the umbrella, not only is there a cuddly elephant but also a box for children to write their worries in. These are then checked and responded to by the grown-ups in school.

"Amazing spaces, super support and resources - FAB!"

The Retreat

The Retreat is an area for small group work focusing on feelings/emotions led by our Learning Mentor or Pastoral TA. Children will get to work on cushions with an ‘Oxley Friend’ to support them.

The Treehouse is a where more formal interventions can take place. Interventions that require writing can take place here.

It is also open and available during most lunchtimes (see Lunch Bunch Club).

The Virtual Hug

Throughout both sites we have introduced ‘Virtual Hugs.’ These calming spaces are designed to support children when they need some time and space and are not yet ready to talk to an adult.

In each tepee, there is a Panda (one of our Oxley Friends) who the children have named for their individual Street or Quad. The Panda is available for cuddles to help calm and comfort the children, alongside a comfy beanbag and blanket. These areas include books which explore feelings and can then be shared with an adult.

  • My children enjoy attending each day. They find the work challenging and interesting. They really like the teaching staff and feel supported and have grown in confidence.
  • Working at Oxley is so special and unique. Everyone is so kind, well-being is at the forefront and our community are a delight. I love my job! (Teacher)
  • The school missions and values make my son want to be a part of the Academy and try his best. I feel proud that my sons are at Oxley Park and the Nursery and I feel that the changes being made are really positive!
  • The children are oozing with so much more ‘zest’ since the start of this year, which makes us as parents happier and excited about their future at OPA.
  • My children love the school! My eldest was quiet, didn’t want to learn, didn’t enjoy school. Now he is settled, has friends and has started to show improvements. My daughter loves her teachers and is extremely enthusiastic.
