Music

Mrs Phillips and Miss O'Brien, our music leads, welcome you...

Welcome to the Oxley Park Academy music page. Here you will find information about music at OPA including our subject pathway, detailing the content taught in each year group and the progression of music throughout a child’s time at OPA. Music is taught as part of our Doorways and Pathways curriculum. We follow the Charanga programme of study and build upon key knowledge of music types and construction. The children have the opportunity to build on their skills throughout their learning journey and are also given the opportunity to learn an instrument for free as part of our curriculum, alongside peripatetic learning opportunities.

What is Music?

Music is the study of sound that is organised using rhythm, melody or harmony.

  • To perform - by understanding that music is created to be performed.
  • To compare - by appreciating that music is created through a process which has a number of techniques.
  • To transcribe - by understanding that compositions need to be understood by others and that there are techniques and a language for communicating them.
  • To describe music - by being able to identify and appreciate the features and effectiveness of musical elements.

Each year the children become more skilled in these key concepts, building upon their prior knowledge and understanding. Our intention is that when they leave in Year 6, they are able to perform as part of a small group, both with their voice and with tuned instruments, be able to make informed choices about the flow of music when composing, they will be able to use basic notation when recording their composition ideas on paper or using technology and talk confidently when appraising music, using musical vocabulary when doing so.
