History
Miss Burrows, our history lead, welcomes you... |
Welcome to the OPA History Page. Here you will find information about History at OPA including our subject pathway; detailing the content taught in each year group and the progression of history throughout a child’s time at OPA. History is taught as part of our Doorways and Pathways curriculum. We follow the National Curriculum programme of study and build upon key themes of communication, evidence and invention throughout history. These themes help children make links between the periods of history they have studied.
What is History? |
History is the study of past events using a range of sources to find evidence about what life was like.
In school we have 4 key concepts in history. As Historians we learn to:
· Investigate and Interpret the past- by looking at the evidence we have about particular periods and events.
· Build an overview of world history- by looking at different periods in history and what life was like for people who lived then.
· Understand chronology- by looking at how to chart the passing of time and understand what was happening in different places around the world at the same time.
· Communicate historically- by using historical vocabulary to explain and describe the past.
Each year the children become more skilled in these key concepts, building upon their prior knowledge and understanding. Our intention is that when they leave in Year 6 they have an understanding of chronology and where each period of time studied fits into wider history, and they can talk confidently about periods of time studied. Children will be able to identify how we know what we know about the past and recognise how this has changed over time. They will be curious to find out more about the past and can use subject-specific vocabulary when making comparisons.
