History
Mrs Frayne-Johnson and Miss Smith, our history leads, welcome you... |
Welcome to the Oxley Park Academy history page. Here you will find information about history at OPA including our subject pathway, detailing the content taught in each year group and the progression of history throughout a child’s time at OPA. History is taught as part of our Doorways and Pathways curriculum. We follow the national curriculum programme of study and build upon key themes of transport, communication, evidence and invention throughout history. These themes help children make links between the periods of history they have studied.
What is History? |
History is the study of past events using a range of sources to find evidence about what life was like.
In school we have 4 key concepts in history. As historians we learn to:
- Investigate and interpret the past - by looking at the evidence we have about particular periods and events.
- Build an overview of world history - by looking at different periods in history and what life was like for people who lived then.
- Understand chronology - by looking at how to chart the passing of time and understand what was happening in different places around the world at the same time.
- Communicate historically - by using historical vocabulary to explain and describe the past.
Each year the children become more skilled in these key concepts, building upon their prior knowledge and understanding. Our intention is that when they leave in Year 6 they are able to talk confidently about periods they have studied, recalling key facts and dates, they understand where each piece fits into wider world history, can compare and contrast periods of time using subject-specific language and use evidence to support or dispute ideas and are curious to find out more about the past.
