PSHCE
Mrs Morris, our PSHCE lead, welcomes you... |
Welcome to the Oxley Park Academy PSHCE page. Here you will find information about PSHCE at OPA including our subject pathway, detailing the content taught in each year group and the progression of PSHCE throughout a child’s time at OPA. At OPA we follow Jigsaw which brings together PSHCE education, relationships and health education, emotional literacy, mindfulness, social skills and spiritual development. All year groups work on the same theme ('puzzle') at the same time at their own level. There are six puzzles (half-term units of work) and each year group is taught one lesson ('piece') per week. All lessons are delivered in an age- and stage-appropriate way, so that they meet children’s needs.
What is PSHCE? |
PSHCE is the study of skills, knowledge and attributes needed to keep safe and healthy and prepare for
life and work.
In school we have 7 key concepts in PSHCE. As emotionally intelligent people we learn to:
- Understand ourselves and our feelings - by addressing our hopes, achievements, rights and responsibilities
- Understand others - by working collaboratively, discussing consequences and understanding the value and role of democracy
- Understand what makes a healthy relationship - by exploring friendships and family roles, conflict resolution, changes, online relationships and mental wellbeing
- Know and understand how to keep ourselves healthy - by discussing our bodies, healthy food choices, personal hygiene, the use of drugs, dealing with peer pressure and gang culture and looking after our mental health
- Have passion and aspirations for our own future - by identifying the struggle others around the world face, looking at future careers and what is needed to achieve these
- Understand the importance of setting goals - by setting challenges and overcoming obstacles, persevering maintaining motivation, by knowing how it feels to be successful
- Develop resilience to overcome challenges - by evaluating how they learn and manage feelings when up against obstacles
Each year the children become more skilled in these key concepts, building upon their prior knowledge and understanding. Our intention is that when they leave in Year 6 they value themselves as individuals, will have learned to celebrate cultural and personal differences, will recognise their own achievements and their potential impact on the wider world, have an understanding of the impact of the world around them, will be able to manage their feelings and understand and reflect on their ever-changing selves.
